N100bn Lost Revenue: Reps Move To Probe Copyright Commission

Worried by the ongoing crisis in the music industry, the House of Representatives yesterday mandated its committees on Justice and Judiciary to investigate the activities of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) to ascertain the alleged manipulation of the musical industry by the commission.

Furthermore, the lawmakers also resolved to engage the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) and a cross section of stakeholders to address the issue of perceived monopoly in Collecting Society Business in Nigeria.
This arose from a motion moved by Hon. Godwin Elumelu (PDP, Delta) on the urgent need to investigate the activities of the NCC, which was unanimously adopted by the House.
“The country, Elumelu argued, is losing over N100 billion annually by this unnecessary institutional bottleneck created by the director-general and management of NCC to the detriment of the economic growth of the country,” he said.
According to him, NCC was “established to regulate the copyright industry and Collecting Society Business but denies the application by the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria for licence to operate as a collecting society.”
“There is a huge agitation”, the lawmaker stressed, “and restiveness by members of MCSN on the perceived reckless attitude of the DG and officials of the NCC and a breakdown of law and order capable of affecting the economy and preservation of law and order in the country is looming in the music industry unless certain proactive steps are taken to arrest the ugly situation
